Alloy Thermo Sorter (ATS-6044T)

for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

The Alloy ThermoSorter (ATS) Model ATS-6044T makes alloy sorting and identification an easy test to perform. The low cost ATS-6044T is lightweight, rugged and portable. It is designed and engineered to be used for alloy classification in a demanding industrial environment, i.e., material storage yards, storage racks, incoming inspection, in-line QC and for use in metallurgical laboratories.

The ATS-6044T operates from AC or from a self-contained, rechargeable battery. During portable or field use, a fully-charged battery will operate the instrument for approximately 8 hours.

Part size or geometry is not critical, thus the ATS-6044T can be used to identify or sort alloys ranging in size from fine wire to large girders, all with the same probe. This is a fully nondestructive test that can be used on precision bearing surfaces.

The test is based on the known thermoelectric principle (Seebeck effect) for alloy sorting and identification. The test results are fast, predictable and reproducible, and are easily read from the digital panel meter. The scientifically designed dual-tipped probe makes one handed operation convenient and practical.

Probe operating temperature may be monitored from a second panel meter provided with the Model ATS-6044T (pictured above). Repeating test conditions as well as the ability to explain possible variations in test results are greatly enhanced through the use of this feature. When the probe is not being used, a holder clip is located on the side of the instrument making storage quick and accessible.

Additionally, the system has been engineered for simplicity of operation, thus avoiding special training. It is "knobless" and does not require adjustments or repetitive calibrations.

Available accessories include two sets of 54 or 44 certified metal reference coupons that are used for expanded alloy identification.

OPERATION:

The ATS-6044T is a highly reliable, and simple to operate instrument requiring minimal operator training.

The ATS-6044T operates from AC or from a self-contained rechargeable battery. During AC operation, the battery automatically receives a floating charge. Whenever portable use is needed, a fully charged battery will operate the instrument for approximately 8 hours.

Indicators on the front panel enable the operator to easily verify that the proper operating temperature of the probe has been reached. Initial warmup is approximately fifteen minutes.

Readings are then easy to make. Position the probe on the sample. The alloy registration numbers will appear very rapidly on the digital meter and stabilize. For alloy identification, this reading is then compared to values obtained from either the table furnished with the instrument or from an alloy of known identity.

Performing consecutive tests is easy and fast. Once the probe is removed from the alloy, the ATS automatically resets.

THEORY OF OPERATION:

The ATS-6044T theory of operation is based on the known thermoelectric principle:

  • When two unlike metals are joined at a hot and cold junction, a micro-voltage is generated between the junctions (also referred to as the Seebeck effect).

The ATS-6044T sets up this temperature difference by means of a dual-tipped reference probe. One tip is at ambient temperature and the other is heated. When the probe is placed on the alloy to be identified, an electric circuit is completed and a signal is generated. This signal is then computed by the circuitry of the ATS unit and a peak reading is obtained and displayed on a digital panel meter. The reading that is produced is representative of the crystalline structure and chemical composition of the metal or alloy being tested. This process is reproducible and distinct for a wide variety of alloys. For alloy identification, this reading is then compared to values obtained from alloy samples of known identify.
